Difference between C45, EN8 AND EN8D.

The medium carbon steel EN8 Steel, usually referred to as C45, is stronger and harder than mild steel. It is frequently employed in high strength applications, including as gears, shafts, and other machine parts. Low carbon steel with moderately low strength and hardness is known as “mild steel.” The main variations between C45, EN8, and EN8D are as follows:

Composition:

C45: C45 is a medium carbon steel grade having a carbon content of roughly 0.45%. Additionally, it has silicon (Si), phosphorus (P), and sulphur (S) in trace levels. It also has manganese (Mn).

EN8: EN8 is a medium carbon steel grade having a carbon concentration of roughly 0.4%. Additionally, it has silicon (Si), phosphorus (P), and sulphur (S) in trace levels. It also has manganese (Mn).

EN8D: EN8D is comparable to EN8 but contains a little more carbon, usually 0.4-0.5%. Additionally, it has silicon (Si), phosphorus (P), and sulphur (S) in trace levels. It also has manganese (Mn).

Mechanical Characteristics

C45: C45 steel has a typical hardness range of 170-210 HB (Rockwell C) and a tensile strength range of 570–700 MPa.

EN8: EN8 steel typically has a hardness range of 150–250 HB and a tensile strength range of 500–700 MPa.

EN8D: EN8D steel typically has a tensile strength between 580 and 800 MPa, which is higher than EN8 steel. The hardness may be between 170 and 240 HB.

Applications :

C45: C45 steel is frequently used for parts and components, such as gears, shafts, axles, and bolts, that need to be moderately strong and robust.

EN8: EN8 steel is frequently used in general engineering applications, such as automobile and construction equipment parts, machinery, and machinery.

EN8D: EN8D steel is frequently used in applications like crankshafts that demand more strength and wear resistance than EN8.
